A few days ago my friend announced the Salt Lake City episode “Insomniac with Dave Atell” which is also encoded in mpeg2. As for the inability to run the file in QuickTime, I myself encountered this when I was looking for a converter program on various websites that would export the file to mpeg2 format, which you can easily see. Apple offers a type codec on mpeg2 on their website for $20 and I found the price a bit high just to view that one file. After trying many different programs and finding that none of them worked, I decided to give this up. I had already watched the episode on TV and realized that the digital copy of it was irrelevant.
Is MPEG-2 a codec?
MPEG-2, commonly referred to as mpeg2, is an audio and video codec standard developed by the Moving Expert Pictures Group. This codec is used to compress digital video and DVD streaming. Media files encoded with the MPEG-2 codec usually have the extension .
But I kept the open source in the real programs folder for a very long time, but mplayer, I never used it. Then, out of morbid curiosity, I found the .mpeg file in MPlayer. It didn’t work!
I haven’t tried it with other mpeg2 encoded files but I’m still sure they will work. MPlayer is a very lightweight application. Just put your files in the “Playlist” window and click “Inreproduce”!
