If you thought state-sponsored Stuxnet was scary, then BadBIOS — any malicious malware that actually uses a computer’s microphone and speakers to whisper to isolated computers — might scare you. All the sci-fi thriller features attributed to an absolutely crappy BIOS make it look like this could be the birth of Skynet-like malware.
Can viruses affect audio?
“Malware, like legitimate platforms, can use all sorts of signals and inputs to activate and customize its operation, so this fully extends to audio inputs,” says Ralf Langner, who lives in Hamburg, Germany and who discovered how the Stuxnet Worm attacked Iranian nuclear enterprises for uranium enrichment.
